Textfiles BBS Audio

Textfiles.com Audio

The Textfiles audio collection is a varied set of audio files collected by Jason Scott, curator of textfiles.com. These are recordings about and from the era of the domination of ASCII and Dial-up Bulletin Board Systems (roughly the 1970s through the 1990s, with examples far before and after that).

textfiles.com was founded in 1998 to collect rapidly disappearing Bulletin Board System texts, especially those written in ASCII (the American Standard Code for Information Interchange). Over the ensuing years, the goals of the website have expanded as more and more artifacts have become available.

Some of the documentary sessions were done by setting up in a space during conventions and recording short sequences with any attendees who wanted to speak about BBSes. Since these interview sets were unplanned and free-form, they went in really unexpected directions and ranged heavily in both subject manner and style. In one case, the interviewee did not want to be recorded on video, but wanted to be interviewed anyway. He claimed to have been a member of the pirate group Razor 1911, and to...

"This con sucks. In fact, every con sucks. Every con was better last year, and that con sucked too." While this sort of discussion takes place at hundreds of bars, hotel rooms and meeting spaces every year, it would be a good thing to have a solid body of knowledge about the history of hacker conferences, their roots and pre-roots, and trends they show as both a cultural event and context in the world. Inspired by Beetle's speech on Shmoocon held while at Shmoocon, discussing the...

Interview with Ben Gardiner, Sysop of the Aids Info BBS in San Francisco, CA. A miscommunication as to the interview being on camera meant that Gardiner (a member of the Screen Actor's Guild) couldn't be filmed.
